Technical Support Officer (two, unpaid, remote)

Position overview: The Technical Support Officer(s) shall be tasked with providing technical and administrative support to the Directors in the design and upkeep of Advocates’ website and social media outlets and will be supporting the Directors in a variety of administrative tasks related to the managing of field missions, remote legal assistance, research programs, fundraising efforts, and regular communication among the field Advocates and remote Advocates. The required availability is a minimum 15 hours per week with a minimum commitment of three months. Flexibility and willingness to work in weekends/with short deadlines is necessary.

Responsibilities:

  • Regular and on-demand updates and upkeep of website, Facebook groups, Google Drive,  and Advocates’ email accounts.
  • Reports directly to Directors.
  • Supports Directors in a variety of administrative tasks, including design and upkeep of Advocates’ databases.

Qualifications:

  • Strong computer skills (website development, database upkeep, email & social media familiarity).
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively, professionally and independently.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and follow-through.
  • Excellent communication skills.

NEW POSTING: Field Coordinator (two, unpaid, field)

Position overview: Advocates Abroad is currently accepting applications for the position of Field Coordinator to support volunteers providing legal aid to refugees and asylum seekers on the ground in Greece. The Field Coordinator would be responsible for preparing, supporting and managing field teams in mainland Greece and the islands. Field teams consist mainly of volunteer attorneys, law students and interpreters. The position is based in Athens, Greece for a minimum period of three (3) months (longer stays preferred). The position includes field training and limited reimbursements for field expenses, but is unpaid. This would be an ideal position for a fellowship recipient with the ability to stay long term in Greece.

Responsibilities: 

  • Support and supervise field volunteers providing legal assistance to refugees and asylum seekers throughout Greece.
  • Work with Directors to ensure effective and thorough training and preparation of field volunteers.
  • Provide logistical and administrative support for volunteers on field missions.
  • Cooperate with external partner organizations and refugee agencies.
  • Represent Advocates Abroad at NGO coordination meetings.

Qualifications:

  • Completed or enrolled in a Graduate degree; law preferred. 
  • Demonstrated experience with and commitment to working with refugees and asylum-seekers.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, effectively, and professionally with team and external partners.
  • Prior experience with Greek refugee camps and volunteer networks an asset.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and follow-through.
  • Mature judgment, strong sense of integrity, and initiative.
  • Excellent communication, strategic thinking, and interpersonal skills.

Position overview: interpreters/translators shall assist field Advocates and remote Advocates in providing legal aid to refugees and asylum seekers in camps and detention centers throughout Greece as well as remotely via email, phone and Skype.

Field interpreters/translators will be supporting field Advocates in providing legal aid to refugees and asylum seekers in Greece. Advocates Abroad has field missions on Samos, Chios, Lesvos, Leros, and in Athens and Thessaloniki. Upon recruitment, a training program will be offered in preparation of the field mission. Minimum mission duration is two weeks, full-time. Long term volunteers are strongly encouraged to apply. Advocates is a fully volunteer-based organization and is unable to reimburse expenses made for travel to and accommodation while working in the field. Advocates provides limited reimbursements for operational expenses made during a field mission. 

Remote interpreters/translators will be providing support to Advocates’ operations by assisting Advocates in translations and interpretations over phone, email and Skype. Upon recruitment, a training program will be offered in preparation of the remote work. The minimum required availability is 5 hours per week, with a minimum commitment of three months.

Qualifications: Demonstrated experience with and commitment to working with refugees and asylum seekers is highly desirable. A strong sense of integrity, cultural sensitivity and ability to maintain confidentiality are required. Fluency in English. Prior experience in interpretation and translation work is highly desirable.

Position overview: 

Field Advocates will be providing legal aid to refugees and asylum seekers in Greece. Advocates Abroad has field missions on Samos, Chios, Lesvos, Leros, and in Athens and Thessaloniki. The successful completion of Advocates’ mandatory training program is part of the recruitment process. The training program includes a standard 20 hours of self-study and two online training sessions. Minimum mission duration for all field positions is two weeks, full-time. Long term volunteers are strongly encouraged to apply. Advocates is a fully volunteer-based organization and is unable to reimburse expenses made for travel to and accommodation while working in the field. Advocates provides limited reimbursements for operational expenses made during a field mission. 

Remote Advocates will be providing support to Advocates’ operations in the Research Team and/or Remote Team. The Research team works on country condition reports and a variety of projects related to European and international standards and practices applicable to asylum and immigration issues and related human rights issues in Europe and beyond. The Remote Team monitors and processes all incoming messages from refugees, asylum seekers and third parties over email and supports Advocates’ operations by operating its Legal Aid Hotline. The minimum required availability is 5 hours per week, with a minimum commitment of three months.

Position overview: Advocates Abroad is in constant need of psychologists/trauma therapists available to conduct assessments of Advocates’ clients in the field in Greece and elsewhere. The assessments can take place remotely (over Skype or phone) or in the field.

Remote position: The minimum desired availability for remote work is three months, five hours per week (approximately one evaluation per week).

Field position: A field based position requires a minimum availability of two weeks and is full-time.

Qualifications: Demonstrated experience with and commitment to working with refugees and asylum seekers or other vulnerable communities is highly desirable. A strong sense of integrity, cultural sensitivity and ability to maintain confidentiality are required. Fluency in English.
